Johal, Soroke and Paredes-Troughton Add More Events for Provincial Championships

September 8, 2022

The Delta Sungod Swim Club had three athletes add to their BC Provincial Swimming Championships event list for July 14-17th weekend at UBC.  New Provincial Championship qualifiers were Rebecca  Soroke (13), Madelyn Paredes-Troughton (12) and Manraj Johal (14).  These additional events allow the athletes to swim more events at the meet.   The swimmers participated at the Vancouver Coastal Divisional Championships in Richmond along with 10 of their Sungod Swim Club team mates.

The meet was a great stepping stone for many of the athletes as it allowed them to race in a championship environment with a larger team and slightly less stress.  The swimmers executed some great race tactics, often winning from behind in the last quarter of the race.  The group’s focus was on staying cool under pressure and being able to step up during their finals swims.

DSSC Top 8 Finishers were:
Kayah Apanowicz (16) silver 100 breaststroke, 4th 50 fly, 5th 200 IM
Jada Evans (17) 7th 200 fly/400 free

A new club record was set by Emma Zhang (10) in the girls 10 & Under Short Course 100 free and 200 freestyle.  The girls 15 & over relay team also broke a record in the 4x50 freestyle relay.  Team members included Kayah Apanowicz, Rebecca Soroke, Chloe Meredith-Jensen and Jada Evans.

DSSC had 6 swimmers make the BC Summer Games team to Prince George on July 21-24th weekend.  Jannat Bhangu (13), Noelle Evans (13), Manraj Johal (14), Harleen Rai (14), and Gurshaan Sangha (13) were nominated to the Zone 4 team while Rebecca Soroke (13) was nominated to the Zone 5 team.  The BC Summer Games is a great stepping stone to bigger and better games events in Canada and the rest of the world.

DSSC swimmers will have a busy month of July with athletes off to BC Provincial Championships at UBC, BC Summer Games in Prince George and the Surrey Summer Splash.  The month of August will be a well deserved break for all of the athletes and coaches.

The Delta Sungod Swim Club will be holding registrations and assessments for new members on September 7 and 8 from 5:00-7:00pm at Sungod Recreation Centre.  (Please note the date change).  The 2022-23 season will begin September 12th.  If you would like more information on DSSC’s programs click on www.teamsungod.ca or call 604-345-5912.
