Amazing Step-Ups in Finals Racing for DSSC Swimmers at BC Provincial Swimming Championships

September 8, 2022

The Delta Sungod Swim Club’s culminating meet of the season was the BC Summer Provincial Championships, and DSSC athletes represented well.  This season’s July Provincial Championships were hosted at UBC and played host to over 500 swimmers.  With only nine club swimmers participating the team’s 28th place finish was a great result.

DSSC’s provincial attendees were Kayah Apanowicz (16), Grace Bruneau (12), Manraj Johal (14) Chloe Meredith Jensen, Madelyn Paredes Troughton (12) Gurshaan Sangha (13), Rebecca Soroke (13), Daniel Wang (15), Max Zha (15).

In this year’s championship every qualified athlete races their events in the morning in preliminary heats, with each age group’s top 10 advancing to an evening final.  It is during this final event that the events final rankings are established.  Delta swimmers stepped up very well in their finals swims with the majority of the athletes either swimming faster than their morning times or advancing their placing in the event.

“It was great to see such amazing step ups in finals for our athletes.  Being able to rise up after a long day of morning racing and find some emotion for the next round of swimming is a great skill to have as an athlete,” says DSSC Head Coach Kurt Murphy.

DSSC Top 10 finishers were:
Grace Bruneau (12) silver 200 fly, 5th 200 breaststroke, 9th 100 breaststroke
Rebecca Soroke (13) bronze 50 fly, 7th 100 fly, 10th 200 fly/50 free
Madelyn Paredes Troughton (12) 5th 100 breaststroke, 6th 50 breaststroke, 7th 200 breaststroke
Kayah Apanowicz (16) 8th 50 breaststroke

Club records were broken by Rebecca Soroke in the 13-14 year old Girls’ 50 fly Long Course, by Madelyn Paredes Troughton in the 11-12 year old Girls’ 50 breaststroke Long Course and by Grace Bruneau in the 11-12 year old Girls’ 200 fly Long Course.

A new Canadian Junior National qualifying time was achieved this meet by Rebecca Soroke in the 100 butterfly.  Max Zha achieved his Westerrn Championship qualifying time in the 200 fly.
