Thirty-Year-Old Club Record Falls This Past Weekend at Hyack
This weekend was a work weekend for swimmers who attended Hyack’s Brad Reid Memorial Meet in Coquitlam. Swimmers alternate training cycles of working and resting. Working occurs 16 out of every 18ish weeks per year. This work is what progresses athletes to the next level. They are tired, a little sore and oftentimes a bit overwhelmed. The kicker is that swimmers are still expected to go to swim meets and race hard; with honest effort. The expectation is not for swimmers to go personal bests, or even to win, but to practice how they would like to swim their races when the work cycle changes into a rest cycle.
Despite some of the hard work that swimmers are doing in the pool and on the pool deck during dryland, the Delta Sungod Swim Club swimmers were fast. A great indicator of fitness and work being done at the pool is Max Zha’s 800 freestyle club record. His time broke the previous record set by Olympian and Delta Sports Hall of Famer, Greg Hamm in 1993.
This weekend saw a total of 6 club records fall. Max Zha broke the boys’ 15 & Over Short Course 800 freestyle and 200 butterfly club records while Rebecca Soroke broke the girls’ 13-14 Short Course 50 free, 50 fly, 100 free and 200 fly records.
There were three relay records broken as well. The 15 & over girls 200 Free Relay, and Medley Relay were broken by Chloe Meredith Jensen (17), Kayah Apanowicz (16), Nora Kennich (16), Rebecca Soroke (14). As well, the 15 & Over 200 Medley Relay was broken by Manraj Johal (15), Daniel Wang (16), Max Zha (16), Arnav Sharma (16).
Daniel Wang (16) was this weekend’s newest BC Provincial qualifier. He achieved it in the 100 freestyle.
Tiger Du achieved 4 new Vancouver-Fraser Valley Divisional Qualifying times: 100 breast, 50 fly, 50 breast, 200 freestyle while Avery Goksel achieved hers in the 100 breast, 200 IM, 50 free and 100 backstroke. Manraj Johal qualified his Vancouver-Fraser Valley Divisional Qualifying times in the 100 free, 50 free and 100 fly. Rebecca Soroke achieved hers in the 400 free. Daniel Wang also achieved his divisional times in the 100 free and 400 free.

The months of November and December are busy for the Delta Sungod Swim Club as they head into their rest blocks and a few meets. The club sees action in November at their home hosted Fun Meet, their LMR Distance Meet on December 3, the Spartans LMR on December 9-10 and FastSwim December 14-17th. Following this tough competition schedule the club is taking 10 days of well-deserved time off. Everyone needs time away from the Head Coach at that point.
For further information on the Delta Sungod Swim Club programs call 604-345-5912 or visit www.teamsungod.ca. The club has on-going registrations throughout the year and assessments are held on the 3rd Monday of each month.
